The Best Time to Apply for Internships (Hint: It's Sooner Than You Think)

Rawwaf Altuwirji - MALTECH

One of the most common mistakes students make is assuming internship deadlines happen in spring. In reality, many of the most competitive internships in finance, consulting, and tech open much earlier often before the academic year has properly started. If you wait until January, you're already behind for many roles.

What Most Students Miss

Top firms recruit on what’s called a rolling basis. That means they review applications — and give out offers — as they come in. If you wait until the final deadline, the best spots may already be filled. This is especially true for firms like Goldman Sachs, BlackRock, and JPMorgan, where summer internship roles can open as early as June and close by October.

The misunderstanding often happens because university careers services push internships during the second term — by then, you're applying for what's left, not what’s best.

When Do Applications Really Open?

In finance and consulting, internship applications for the following summer usually open between June and September, nearly a full year in advance. For example, summer 2026 internship applications at most global banks will open in summer 2025 and close by autumn.

Even firms outside the “bulge bracket” space like asset managers, Big 4, and consulting firms tend to open recruitment by early autumn. Spring Weeks in the UK, targeted at first-year students, open even earlier (August to October).

What You Should Be Doing And When

If you want to stay ahead of the cycle, here’s a sustainable plan:

  • May–June: Build your CV, start networking, polish your LinkedIn, and take certifications.

  • July–August: Begin submitting early applications, don’t wait for your university to tell you when.

  • September–October: Continue applying, especially for firms that open later. This is also a good time to start preparing for online assessments and video interviews.

  • November–January: Focus on boutiques, smaller firms, or firms with longer cycles. But don’t rely on this period, most competitive firms are done recruiting by now.

Is It Too Late If You’re Behind?

Not necessarily. You can still find internships through platforms like Forage, Bright Network, LinkedIn, or cold-emailing small firms. But if you’re targeting top firms, it’s best to treat applications like exam prep: start early, pace yourself, and know the key deadlines.

Final Thoughts

The best time to apply isn’t just “early” it’s when you’re ready, and ideally before others are. If you want a competitive internship, especially in finance, your window of opportunity opens in the summer before the year you're applying for. Waiting until term two is often too late.

If you’re serious, start preparing now not when the pressure hits.
